Abbevillian John McMahan, a World War II veteran, will be honored by the Major John Bowie Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution on Saturday, May 28, at 10 a.m. on the steps of the Abbeville County Courthouse in Abbeville. Chapter Regent Lucy Willis said Friday that he will be presented with the DAR Medal of Honor, which is the highest honor awarded by the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. He will also be presented with a certificate from the NSDAR. South Carolina Society Daughters of the Amerifcan Revolution will be attending from throughout the state, Willis continued. "Mr. McMahan was recommended for this Medal by the American Legion Post Two," said Willis, adding that the general public is invited to attend the program on Saturday. The program will go on rain or shine, Willis continued. McMahan is noted for his book called The Prisoner, in which he discussed his experiences as a prisoner of war in a German camp during the Second World War. The Prisoner stems from the compilation of a series of interviews with The Press and Banner. |
