The number of women with need is far greater than the Mission capacity,
and women who meet the admission qualifications are sometimes turned away because of lack of usable space.
Sunshine Mission places great importance on the need to restore and rehabilitate
the remainder of the century-old historic landmark facility. At the current time, only about three-fourths of
the facility is available for use to assist women during their time of urgent need. This on-going task to
creatively adapt a piece of Los Angeles' architectural heritage to meet the needs of today's City has proved
to be expensive.
Like other nonprofit organizations, Casa de Rosas, Inc. operates in an
environment that is characterized by shrinking resources. At the same time, it consistently tries to expand
the array of support services that it makes available to the women it serves. For each woman who stays in
its Sunshine Mission at no personal expense, the agency spends about $27 per day.
The agency pays most, but not all of the Sunshine Mission expenses with funding
from an array of local, state and federal sources. With the commitment to turning no woman away if the
Sunshine Mission has an empty bed, the agency often provides women with shelter
and services that it must fund from its own resources.
In the face of such conflict, this agency welcomes assistance from
generous individuals and businesses who make regular donations. Sunshine Mission
would be very happy to have individuals or companies that will elect to sponsor a dorm room, or a woman for
the duration of her stay. For additional information, please contact the shelter manager.
